Volunteer Programs for Seniors

(RSVP) retired & senior volunteer program
(RSVP) matches the abilities and interests of those 55 years of age and older with community needs in Portage, Ashtabula, Stark, Jefferson and Columbiana counties. Seniors volunteer their services with children, the elderly, and those who are ill.

senior companion program
The Senior Companion Program, one of only six in Ohio, provides an avenue for income-eligible seniors to earn a modest tax-exempt stipend. They volunteer 20 hours each week in the homes of the elderly writing letters, preparing meals, assisting with light house work, and other tasks as needed. This program is provided in Portage, Summit and Stark counties.

Foster grandparents program
(Portage, Stark, Mahoning and Trumbull)
The Foster Grandparent Program is a volunteer service that gives a child the much needed attention that can change their life.

King-Kennedy Community Center
The King-Kennedy Community Center's mission statement is to join in the collective effort to better the Portage County Community by volunteering at the King-Kennedy Center and working with area residents to improve living conditions.

Skeels-Mathews Community Center
Skeels is a community center which provides services and programs for all Portage County residents. The mission of Skeels Community Center is to improve the educational, physical, cultural, and social aspects of the community and surrounding areas.

Chagrin Falls Park Community Center
Community Centers promote activities, self awareness, and pride for ones own local community. Centers typically offer recreational, educational, and social activities for people of all ages. Often times, Community Centers target marginal and/or low-income areas and are located in either rural or inner city areas.

Senior nutrition program
The Senior Nutrition Program assists the elderly in maintaining a balanced diet by providing one nutritionally balanced meal each weekday to individuals 60 years of age and older. This service is offered at a number of locations throughout the community. >more

POWERcorps Program
POWERcorps is a community service program of AmeriCorps, a National Service initiative established in 1993. Operating as a domestic version of the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps has provided the experience of a lifetime to more than 250,000 men and women. POWERcorps features full and half-time members recruited from the community and around the country. POWERcorps members activities are guided by the Program Director and Program Coordinator, with the support of the Advisory Board and collaborating agencies.>more

King-Kennedy Community Center

Opened in November of 1989, its mission is to serve hot meals and provide an emergency food pantry, along with referral and advocacy services.

Portage Area Transitional Housing
The PATH program assists homeless families and individuals who are experiencing significant difficulties that hinder their ability to maintain stable housing.  PATH offers comprehensive, supportive services and subsidized transitional housing for up to 24 months to support participants in their efforts to increase social and economic strength and to secure permanent, stable housing.

Miller Community House
Miller Community House exists to provide emergency shelter to those adults and children in a housing crisis, while also providing support advocacy, and referrals to encourage self-sufficiency and movement towards permanent housing.

Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA)
AmeriCorps*VISTA is a national service program dedicated to eliminating poverty by helping individuals and low-income neighborhoods make positive changes for themselves. Through AmeriCorps*VISTA, ordinary people provide extraordinary service in more than 1,200 projects nationwide. >more

Housing and Emergency Support Services
The HESS program assists families and individuals experiencing a crisis that threatens their stability and well being. Services include crisis intervention, emergency financial assistance, and short-term case management and service coordination.

Freedom House
Freedom House provides emergency shelter and supportive services to adult male veterans who are experiencing a housing crisis.  Essential to our mission is improving the quality of life for our residents by providing a 90-day shelter that includes individual case management, advocacy, information and referrals to area resources.

Miller Community House
Miller Community House exists to provide emergency shelter to those adults and children in a housing crisis, while also providing support advocacy, and referrals to encourage self-sufficiency and movement towards permanent housing.

County Clothing Center
Providing gently used clothing (as available) to low income families/individuals in need, at no charge; reducing the waste stream by recycling used clothing.
