POWERcorps, an AmeriCorps program
Mission Statement:
To support individuals with special needs through interactive education within the community and to promote more open and accepting attitudes.
PowerCorps is a community service program of AmeriCorps, a national service initiative established in 1993. Operating as a domestic version of the peace Corps, AmeriCorps has provided the experience of a lifetime to more than 250,000 men and women. PowerCorps features full and half-time members recruited from the community and around the country. PowerCorps members' activities are guided by the Program Director and the Program Coordinator, with the support of the Advisory Board and collaborating agencies. This program's objectives include: increasing social contacts, enhancing personal relationships, and building community networks. The interactions through the program bridge a large social gap for both the community and the individuals with MR/DD, serve as "Volunteer Coaches", enable individuals with MR/DD to give back to their community and participate in National Days of Service, such as Martin Luther King Day, Make a Difference Day and national Volunteer Week.

Eligibility:
AmeriCorps is an incredible opportunity to a make a difference in your life and in the lives of those around you. Its a one-year commitment to national service that will challenge you to put your skills and ideals to work while helping others. AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents aged 17 or older. members serve full or half-time over a 10 to 12 month period. After completing a year of service, AmeriCorps members who are enrolled in the National Service Trust are eligible to receive an educational award. The educational award can be used to pay education costs at qualified institutions of high education or training, or to repay qualified student loans.
