On October 22, Safer Futures will hold our first “Hope in a Handbag” a festive and unique fundraiser that will become an annual signature event for us. We want the community to anticipate this special evening every fall, just as it used to look forward to the evening at the Porthouse Theatre. So here’s what to expect.
The festivities, which begin at 6:30 p.m., will center on delicious hors d’oeuvres and specialty beverages where women’s purses will be featured for silent or live auction. Women across generations will come to the Kent State University School of Fashion for an hour or two of conversation, friendship and networking. We’ll feature a variety of women’s purses, some new and some gently used, which is where you come in.
Proceeds from this event will be used to continue our mission of providing a safe, supportive, confidential location for women and their children fleeing domestic violence. We’re here with open arms, hearts and ears. And we’re here to let women know that they’re not alone…there is hope.
Domestic Violence continues to be the leading cause of injury to women in the United States, out-ranking auto accidents, rape, and muggings combined. According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, domestic violence continues to be one of the most common calls received. Domestic Violence knows no color, gender, age or socioeconomic status. The abuse can be physical, mental, sexual or emotional. Victims of domestic violence may feel like there’s nowhere to turn.
But there is hope. For those who have been hurt by domestic violence, Safer Futures is here to help.
Won’t you join us during “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” as we ensure for all of those women and children in our community that there is somewhere to turn and someone who will help?
